Introduction to
Leadership Storytelling.

To be an impactful communicator and leader, you need to be able to connect with people on a deep and personal level. Story is the most naturally human route to this connection, whether drawing on your own story or shaping stories of change.

This course will give you the foundations of leadership storytelling for our fragmented age.

Who is this for?

This course is for individuals who recognise that personal leadership skills are essential for career progress or want to unlock the potential of their own business. Whether or not you have direct leadership responsibilities, you’ll want to influence the thinking and perceptions of others. Storytelling skills are what you need to succeed.

You will:
  • deepen your understanding of the principles and science of story
  • understand how to develop your own character and tell your personal story
  • develop the sense-making skills of leadership
  • learn how to reduce friction, confusion and resistance in others.

Great leaders use storytelling to achieve great results, and this course gives you the tools.

What's included?

This course introduces you to the science behind storytelling, how our brain is built to engage best when sharing stories. It also shows you how to apply these insights immediately in your day-to-day communication, focusing on sharing your authentic self and using your stories to engage people in the challenges you’re facing.

In Module One we'll look at the neuroscience foundations underpinning the power of story.

Module Two
is all about understanding your character and how to use it impactfully.

Module Three
is where we explore the structure of story and a range of story types to use in different situations.

Module Four
focuses on building your origin story.

In Module Five we look forwards, at change stories.

Module Six
is about delivering your stories.

And Module Seven is the time for your action planning.

The emphasis is always on practical, real-world application rather than theory for theory’s sake.

How long will it take?

This course is a series of 7 modules comprising 9.5 hours of study, depending on how you approach the material and the time you spend on the reflections and exercises.

We strongly recommend doing all of the activities we've included. You’ll learn most by reflecting on who you are and the stories you have to share, so commit to the time before signing up.

What do I have to do?

We provide the knowledge you need to become a leader with story in your toolkit. We’ve included the following along the way to encourage an active learning approach. We want you to implement what you learn, and the best means of achieving that is to encourage you to apply what you are learning in the real world. You will need to complete the modules in order.

You’ll be presented with:

Reflections
We want you to explore your relationship with stories through your life.
  • Some will have made you the person you are
  • Some will be experiences to share
  • Others will be those you’ve read or watched

Activities

We’ll ask you to use what you’re learning to understand how and why story works, and how to use it in your business.

These activities are simple and accessible — you won’t need specialist knowledge or prior storytelling experience.

Module assessments

At the end of each module you’ll find a multiple-choice self-assessment. The questions will be about the technical aspects of story you’re learning about. We aren’t checking your scores, but we encourage you to go back over sections of the module where you may not have answered correctly.

You’ll also find that in some places we’ve used a structure that enables you to hide content so that you can test yourself as you go along.

The purpose of assessment in this course is to help you learn, not to judge your performance. Use it wisely.

What do I get at the end?

Obviously you’ll have the skills and knowledge to start your journey as a leader with storytelling in your toolkit, as well as:

  • access to a downloadable course certificate
  • our pocket-sized reminder about using story in your business
  • 9.5 hours of CPD-accredited learning for your professional body.

What does it cost?

The cost is GBP195 including VAT, payable in full when you sign up.

My own story
In the first half of my adult life, story was something that only had meaning in my spare time. By day, my life was corporate strategy, major transformation, leading teams. By night, I was learning the tools and techniques of story in all its forms. When I was forced to choose between the conflicting demands on my time, I stuck with story. By then I’d understood that story could be way more influential, in life and work.

That was some 20 years ago. Since then I’ve devoted my working life to helping organisations and leaders master the art and science of narrative. When it’s working, it’s pretty much unstoppable.

Specialisms
  • Shaping complex transformation into ‘seasons’ of purposeful progress
  • Coaching leaders to better connect with people
  • The best TV drama of the last 30 years

My own story
Story has always been central to what I do. I wrote my first novel at sixteen (long before I understood storytelling!) and later spent twelve years in corporate communications across London, Sydney, and Hong Kong. Those years showed me how powerfully language shapes belief, behaviour, and momentum—especially in moments of change.

Today, I run the Asia business for Write the Talk, working with leaders and organisations to help them navigate complexity with clarity and confidence.

Alongside this, I’ve built a creative life as a writer and screen storyteller. I co-founded an Australian production company focused on telling fierce female stories, producing award-winning work that has reached audiences around the world. I have two novels coming out this year, published by independent publishers in the US and Europe.

Across everything I do, story is the through-line. It’s how change becomes human, how leadership builds trust, and how people find the confidence to speak in their own voice. And perhaps most importantly, how we find our tribe.

Specialisms
  • Helping businesses take people through change in a more meaningful way
  • Working with leaders to help them find their authentic voice and build stories that connect
  • Award-winning screenwriter

I really appreciated how engaging each session was. You have a way of keeping the discussions meaningful while still making the concepts practical and easy to apply.

Thank you again for creating a space that challenged me to think.

I really do appreciate the sessions from your programme. It was an eye-opener! I hope to keep the momentum going even in daily conversations. It’s still work in progress but I’m determined.
